Young Adult Literature: writing to heal troubled minds

There is an interesting offering in today's Teacher College Record (11/07/08), published by the Teachers College of Columbia University. In her article, "Young Adult Fiction and the Stewardship of Pain," Sara Zarr opens with this incredible statement: "Good realistic fiction for young adults marries the universal and the specific into stories that give teens both a mirror for their own pain and a glimpse of possible ways of navigating it."

Truth lurking behind the curtain

You’ve experienced it before: You’re on the edge of your seat, popcorn in hand, watching the main character of the latest thriller enter a darkened room. You know that Truth is hiding behind the curtain, yet the hero walks through the room, glancing out the window, never suspecting Truth's presence, though just inches away. Inside you scream, "Look behind the curtain!"

The Ward Churchills of K-12 education are subverting public control over curriculum while leading future generations down the road of relativist, deconstructionist nonsense. And, these subversives are doing so with a wink or nudge from administrators, while their employers, the local school boards, argue over bus routes and lunch offerings.
