PRESIDENT OBAMA TO DELIVER NATIONALLY BROADCAST ADDRESS TO STUDENTS ON SEPT. 8
Â
The President will deliver a speech about the importance of persisting and succeeding in school on Sept. 8, the first day of school for many children across America. The Department of Education is encouraging educators, students and parents to use this opportunity to help students get focused and begin the school year strong. The speech will be broadcast live on www.whitehouse.gov at 1 p.m. EDT. The Department of Education has also asked a group of U.S.
Department of Education Teaching Ambassador Fellows to develop some suggested classroom activities around the speech to help engage students and stimulate discussion on the importance of education in their lives. The suggested classroom activities will be available on www.ed.gov.

Here's how the President described the speech in a recent interview with 11 year-old reporter Damon Weaver yesterday: "On Sept.
8, when young people across the country will have just started or are about to go back to school, I'm going to be making a big speech to young people all across the country about the importance of education, the importance of staying in school, how we want to improve our education system, and why it's so important for the country. And so I hope everybody tunes in."

Sounds like a really good day for several million kids to stay home. We could call it a national anti-indoctrinational message. Schools get paid for having students in their seats. If there are no students in those chairs, that might send a message to the NEA that we won't stand for this indoctrination of our kids to the "Obama Way".
Wow, I really can't believe that Americans are being so ignorant and narrow-minded over our president’s desire to inspire our children. He will be guilty of asking them to stay in school, do there best, and if they work hard enough then telling them that there dreams are all possible. It's a presidents job to lead and the best leaders inspire. His address is not without precedent as both George H. and George W. Bush addressed our children without such an uproar.
Whether you are on the right or the left should not matter, as this address is not about policy it is solely done to inspire our children. Shouldn't we expect our President be a positive role model? I fear that the objections may stem from outright racism, as this level of uproar over a something that at worst would fail to inspire but not harm our children and at best inspire our kids as to the greatness of America, is ridiculous.
Ronald Regan weather you liked him or not was inspirational and after the Iran Hostage debacle his positive leadership and inspirational speeches was something this nation desperately needed. We elected Barack Obama as our president. As a country we need to come together and not fight over nonsense. When I read the vitriolic hatred behind the arguments stating that it's the parent’s job to inspire (and by the way that does not always happen) I then ask, would you object if it were George Washington or Abraham Lincoln giving the speech.
Maybe it is time we all look in the mirror and decide its time we stopped listening to the talking heads on the radio and started to think for ourselves. I for one would rather have my son look up to the president as a role model than an actor or athlete.
School is for teaching...  Now that we've established that, let's move on to the issue at hand. More importantly, let's recognize the portrayed indignation for what it really is: small-minded pettiness. Â
Please prove me wrong. It is very simple to do so...  Just ask yourself one simple question:  Would you have the same objections if the exact same speech were to be presented a president John McCain? Or George W. Bush? Or any other recent republican president? How about by a Vice President Palin? Look in the mirror and answer truthfully.
I think we all know the answer already.
Â
i think that if our president is addressing the students of the nation then it should be the children's dicision whether or not they want to watch it. Barack Obama is everyone who lives in the United States of America 's president. whether you support him or not, he is our leader. i do agree that school is a time for education and not for watching televison. however, if it is our president who is speaking on the television that the students are watching then it is not just something to pass the time in class. it will be brought up in social studies classes. it will be part of american history. this is not the first time a president will be addressing students. yes, maybe it should have been scheduled for the evening and that would have prevented all of this anger. but the bottom line is that it is not going to be broadcasted in the evening, it will be shown at 1:00 pm. schools surely should not force all of their students to watch but if we want to see it then they should show it in atleast one room so noone will have to leave/ stay home from school. this is not politics, President Obama is not trying to win a vote. this is a motivational speech towards the young people of america, the people that will be taking care of you when you're not able to. let us think with our own minds.
I think this speech is not a good idea, simply because us students are pushed by our parents and teachers everyday to succeed, and we don't need to president to do so as well. I'm a 15 year in high school, and I think children my age, younger, and older already know that we need to succeed and the very few who don't care aren't, aren't going to have their minds changed by the president. If anything, he'll get laughed at.
I AGREE WITH BOTH OF YOU MY KIDS WILL STAY HOME AND LEAVE A EMPTY SEAT THAT DAY TOO!! I AGREE A MESSAGE SHOULD BE IN THE EVENING WITH PARENTS, NOT AT SCHOOL...TEACH THE CHILDREN THATS WHAT YOU ARE GETTING PAID FOR AND POLITICS SHOULD STAY OUT OF THE CLASSROOM
The same way religion should be kept out of the classroom?
So let me get this straight: You will keep your kids out of school so they miss a message about staying in school and taking responsibility? WOW!!!!  Is this how we want to teach our children to respect other people's opinions? Don't throw a tantrum because you are not getting your own way. That makes no sense at all unless you're two. Why not let them hear the message and then discuss it with them.     Listening to someone else's opinion or views may teach you something you .... How about you try to be objective and let your kids have an opinion of their own....or are you afraid they might not have the same ones that you do?
All he is doing is trying to push his agenda on our kids so they will talk to thier parents about it. I want to keep my daughter out of school that day too, because I don't want to have to correct her on everything they talk about. Our kids should not be forced to watch this crap so they can shove their political views down thier throghts.
My 6 year old son doesnt need to hear from the President how important it is to stay in school, he learns that from his parents. Why are we putting up with the Government trying to raise our children? Has America gotten that LAZY to have to rely on schools and government to teach our kids whats right and wrong? Well I guess thats a stupid question isnt it? Im all for the President supporting our school system, but I dont think this is the way to go about it. My kiddo will be having a 3.5 day weekend, and to be honest, I dont think hes going to miss out on a lot. Be thankful for good public schools, because they arent found in a lot of areas.
The problem is there are many, too many deadbeat parents, or parents who just don't know any better, who do NOT instill good morals and ethics into their kids. Look at the high school drop out rate. Regardless of that, what is so bad about the leader of our country giving a positive speech to our children? What is so wrong with them getting to hear directly from him?
Mr Obama wants us to cram so much into these kids' heads, and wants every child to pass all of the high-stakes tests. Then he takes instruction time away from us!!! How brilliant!!!
I'm pretty sure the "cramming" for high stakes tests philosophy started while "W" was in office with No Child Left Behind. Â Funny thing about NCLB... it requires states to use standardized testing, but each state can choose it's own test. Â At the start of it, Texas schools did horribly. Â But after a few years their scores started to sky-rocket! Proof that the testing mentality was improving student achievement? Â Nope... Texas merely lowered the difficulty of the test. Â That's good learnin' for ya!
Wow!Am I the only person alive that views this as a positive idea? The president is trying to motivate kids to learn - can't we keep it simple and keep your stupid political agendas to yourself? He is a good man with good intentions.
No, I all for it. It isn't a political message, it's a motivational message. We didn't hear all this bull when Bush did his video message. There was a day when you respected the President, no matter what party you were affiliated with.
He may have good intentions, but it's a waste of time. As a sophomore in high school, I think I speak for most of the kids when I say that the people who don't try aren't going to be swayed by this little speech. And that's what it's all about right? Getting kids to try? Obama's not going to succeed in his speech. Children are pushed day after day to succeed and learn by their teachers and parents and what difference is it going to make if Obama makes a speech or not. Chances are people are making a big stink about this to cover something else up. But I don't know what that is.
My daughter, who is in the 2nd grade will also be staying home from school on Tuesday. She learns right from wrong at home with her parents!
I am a 2nd grade teacher and I am having a huge problem with all of the mess going around. I did not and do not support Mr. Obama, his lackies in the White House nor the mental midgets in Congress but I do support our nation and the office of the President. If he is going to talk to our youth then it is my duty to preview it, as I would anything I show my students, be sure it is relevant as well as comprehendible to my 7 year olds. I hope the message is not all the "Little Red Book" sort of propaganda many say. If it is a message of work ethic, dedication, and goal setting then we will watch it and discuss it.  Our mission is to educate our children to become hard working, honest, dedicated citizens to the United States of America. Not one person or party.
